Ludmila Kouzmin's art training began when she was 14 years old with private lessons. After finishing her secondary education she studied Fine Arts and Russian at Melbourne University and attended evening art classes at the Gallery of Victoria Art School. During the summer breaks Ludmila enrolled in summer art classes with Noel Counihan, Clifton Pugh and Louis Khan.

In 1975 Ludmila was awarded a Ph.D in Russian linguistics (Melbourne University). She then worked for a number of years as a university lecturer, and later, in the Commonwealth Public Service. Throughout this time Ludmila pursued her art practice as a ‘Sunday painter’and occasionally exhibited in group shows.

Ludmila had her first solo show in 1995 in Newtown, Sydney.

"My interest in painting people is based on observing the various manifestations of body language and what it reveals about emotional and psychological states, as well as wider social issues," said Ludmila of her approach.  "I paint predominantly in oils – my favourite medium because of its luminosity and the physicality of its texture. In each painting I have worked with the aim of creating a pleasing image that, hopefully, expresses an idea and evokes a mood."

Ludmila painted and sketched in a full time capacity for over 25 years and more recently at her studio near Murwillumbah, northern NSW, Australia, from 2003 until her death in 2016.
